Affiliated Services - Developmental Optometry

While all optometrists and ophthalmologists are concerned with the health and physical abilities of the eyes, the developmental optometrist is also concerned with the functionality of the eye - how the eyes are helping or hindering a person as they use their vision in their daily activities. They look at the whole person and how their vision has "developed", along with any corresponding learning or reading difficulties. The developmental optometrist will look extensively at binocularity - how the eyes interact with each other and with the brain.

Twenty percent (20%) of the population can suffer from Binocular Vision problems. These problems are often not detected during a standard Optometric or Ophthalmologic exam, or during routine school, employment or pediatric screenings. A large majority of the time, the person does not need corrective lenses and may attribute their difficulties to other issues. Some common labels that are mistakenly applied to individuals with Binocular Vision problems are: clumsy, careless, ADD or ADHD, and many forms of learning disabilities. Everyone is a potential candidate for a Developmental Optometric Exam since these problems are often "hidden."

Some of the services provided through our collabaration with Developmental Optometrists in the Orlando area include:

  • Developmental Optometric Evaluations
  • Visual Perceptual Testing
  • Vision Therapy/Training
  • Vision–related Reading Skills Development
